The Utility of the Turing Test

I'll discuss the utility of the Turing Test from three perspectives, with some connections to issues in computer science. Historically, was the Turing Test a novel proposal? Pragmatically, is the Turing Test a useful benchmark for guiding research towards artificial intelligence? Philosophically, does the Turing Test provide an appropriate criterion for attributing intelligence?
